The Legend of Stingy Jack is an Irish/Scottish folktale about a guy named Jack who welched on a deal with the Devil. He didn’t win or lose, but tricked the Devil, so as punishment, the Devil made Jack roam the land with just a piece of coal to light his way. Jack placed his coal into a carved out turnip, which is what the Europeans used instead of pumpkins and so the Legend of the Jack O’ Lantern was born.
